Open Science in Open Innovation Model in Covid-19 Times – Evidence on Scientific Collaboration

Abstract:

The ongoing outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic had made an impact on probably all areas of human behavior. It has trigged a global economic contraction unlike anything seen for as long as we can remember. It has severely tested our healthcare systems, and recovery from this disease will soon test our economies. Undoubtedly the fact that contemporary economies can be characterized as the knowledge ones has determined the instruments with which we fight the pandemic and its aftermath. These instruments are innovations. And due to the fact, that fighting pandemic is an instant race against time – innovations had to be delivered quickly and meet the needs. This has caused a global mobilization of knowledge resources and adoption of existing innovation models to the needs of innovation creation. Open innovation model has been used in pharmaceutical companies for several decades as a tool to overcome the ineffectiveness of pharmaceutical R&D. And the “open” idea of innovation turned out to be right to use in pandemic times. Its elasticity, susceptibility to introducing changes and goal-orientation made it made it tailored to contemporary challenges  The goal of the hereby article is to examine how open innovation model has adopted to crisis conditions, how it has changed and how have the scientific alliances contributed to the discovery of Covid-19 vaccine.
