Opinion Poll on Respiratory System Disorders in Romania, the Main Cause of Lung Cancer

Abstract:

The management of the medical services for patients with respiratory system disorders, especially for lung cancer patients, is a topic of high and global interest. The lung cancer is one of the main causes of mortality due to neoplasms, in both men and women. The most common etiological agent involved in the onset of lung cancer is the (active, but sometimes passive) smoking. However, according to Tweedie and Mengersen (2002), lung cancer also occur in non-smoking individuals, in these situations being correlated with chronic exposure to powders such as asbestos (asbestosis), exaggerated air pollution in industrial areas or even with genetic factors.Through this study we took into consideration the implementation of several programs for combating smoking among the Romanian population. That's why we conducted a survey on the perception of smoking by the Romanian population, establishing their level of dependence and knowledge about the effects of cigarette smoking. Following the survey the main conclusion was that: out of the total respondents only 40% do not smoke, the remaining 60% being either smokers or occasional smokers. At the same time, a significant percentage of the respondents (74%) consider that light cigarettes would be much less harmful to individual health, and 58% believe that if they propose they can stop smoking at any time. At the end of the study we proposed based on a SWOT analysis some recommendations such as: using media and education campaigns in order to encourage people to do periodic analyzes and checks; using pictures and clear messages on the cigarette packets smoking and other places of exposure about the danger that smokers are exposed to; the development of national education and prevention programs that improve the health of the population and reduce the costs of treatments, etc.
