Problems of the Least-Developed Districts in the Slovak Republic

Abstract:

The paper informs about the Least-Developed Districts (LDD) which are a part of the agenda of regional policy of the Slovak Republic. The legal foundation for the problematics of LDD is the Law on Support of Lagging Regions (Act No. 336/2015 Coll.). The following information is provided from the statutory text: the definition of LDD, conditions for enlisting a district in the LDD list, recipients of support within LDD, Action Plan as the tool to remove lagging of the LDD, Council for Development of LDD as an advisory authority of the Government Office of the Slovak Republic. Only the most important changes have been chosen from the amendment of the act. The paper further discusses concrete ways of aid for the development of LDD, such as: Action Plan, state subsidy – financial aid from the budget of the Government Office of the Slovak Republic, Prime Ministers’reserve, additional programmes of the Government Office support from the Environmental fund of the Slovak Republic, aid from ESIF – Operational Programme Research and Investments, programmes of foreign cooperation, projects of the European regional cooperation, programme of Transfrontier Cooperation, activities of the organization of tourism for the development of  region, financial support of a foreign investor. Tables provide a list of LDD and the development of unemployment in LDD and districts in May 2017 and May 2018 (while enhancement can be observed in all districts).
