Production of Hybrid Maize Seeds in Braila County. Characteristics and Evolution (2007-2018)

Abstract:

The cereals have a large proportion in the total area cultivated in Romania, ensuring the need for certified seeds being essential for a modern and competitive agriculture. Romanian farmers have competence, tradition and experience in the cultivation of cereals, maize being one of the imported crop plants that has adapted best to the pedoclimatic conditions in our country. At national level, cereal production is largely influenced by meteorological factors, and in these conditions the provision of areas specialized in the production of seeds, which ensure constant and quality production is of major importance for agricultural producers. The paper performs a general evaluation of the status of the land areas sown with plots of maize hybridization, respectively of the quantities of certified maize seeds obtained between 2007 and 2017 in Brăila county, Romania. Reported to the surface cultivated at national level, the concentration degree of the farms specialized in the production of maize seeds in Brăila county is significantly higher compared to other agricultural regions in Romania. The article proposes an analysis of the areas cultivated with maize hybridization plots and of the factors that determined the concentration of seed production in the South-East Region, in Braila county, Câmpia Bărăganului, as well as an analysis of the factors that determined the specialization of the agricultural producers in this segment of production. The results obtained are useful for the agricultural sector and for the business environment. The obtained results can be benchmarks for identifying local and national areas favorable to the cultivation of maize hybridization plots and the extension of the production models in other Romanian farms.
