Abstract:
This study examines the nexus between agricultural employment and Sustainable Development in ECOWAS countries. The study makes use of secondary data and the System Generalised Method of Moments (SGMM) econometric technique was used to analyse the data. SDG1 proxied by poverty was used as the dependent variable while agriculture value added, employment in agriculture, inequality, literacy rate, population growth rate and gross domestic savings were the explanatory variables. The study finds that both agriculture value added and employment in agriculture were both statistically significant in explaining poverty and were negatively related to poverty in the ECOWAS sub-region. Therefore, based on the findings, the study recommends that governments of ECOWAS countries should focus more on agriculture so as to be exporters of cash crops that will generate foreign exchange for their economies and increase savings that can be used to alleviate and eliminate poverty among the people
