Psychological Models for Blood Glucose Regulatory System – Comparative Review

Abstract:

Diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the blood glucose concentration due to lack of the hormone insulin. The recent reports released by The World Health Organization say that it affects about 100 million people worldwide. The blood glucose regulatory system has been investigated by researchers since 1960 when the first mathematical model was presented. During the last years, a variety of models have been presented to model and describe different aspects of it including glucose and insulin dynamics, external insulin and food uptake or the psychical activity impact. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of psychological models used to model the blood glucose regulatory systems and the possibility to model the external insulin and food ingestion. The benchmark of some models was carried out and compared to the data gathered with Oral Glucose Test performed by the author.
