The Current Status of Social Entrepreneurship in Malaysia: An Exploratory Case

Abstract:

Social entrepreneurship has become a common interest due to its enormous opportunities to challenge, question and rethink concepts and assumptions from different fields of management and business research. Despite growing rapidly and attracting increased attentions in many developed countries, social entrepreneurship still can be considered new and in fact the activities are still at ground-level within the Malaysian context. Specifically, this study was carried out to understand current status of the social entrepreneurship in Malaysia context. The main purpose of this study was to explore the current status and development in social entrepreneurship as an important phenomenon in today's entrepreneurship era. A qualitative approach was adopted since this method considered as most appropriate for the study that specifically deal with complex social phenomenon where data collection on the private social entrepreneur in Malaysia as this facilitates in assessing and evaluation the particular phenomenon more intensely. Data had been collected through in-depth interview which were conducted among the social entrepreneurs. To end with, this study has highlighted that social entrepreneurship is in growing stage and still in its very early stages. Thus, this study also can be used to revamp the existing platform initiated by Malaysian government and private sector to promote social business.
