Regional Analysis of the Employment Rate in the Central and Eastern European Countries

Abstract:

The cohesion policy promoted in the regions of the European Union countries improved the regional competitiveness and the quality of life. Although, during the 2008-2012 period most of the Central and Eastern European states were faced with a loss of jobs and productivity gains, these countries are still working on achieving the Europe 2020 goals. In order to identify the determinants of the employment rate among the regions of seven CEEC, we decided to estimate a panel data model for the period 2003-2011. The results were consistent with the international literature, and the gross fixed capital formation proved to be the most important factor in increasing the employment rate.
