Remote Employment Patterns and Typically «Female» Occupations in the Conditions of Global Labour Market Transformations

Abstract:

The offer of flexible working arrangements is a new contemporary solution to women's employment, designed to relieve the tension between women’s dual work and family roles. While information technologies are developing and the range of positions in the remote employment segment is expanding, women are getting the opportunity to combine work and household responsibilities successfully. This paper presents the analysis of remote, part-time and self-employment in the European Union (EU-28) and the Russian Federation for the period 2008-2018. The analysis shows that over the past decade the number of precariously and remotely employed had had significantly increased. According to the analysis, currently in the world more than 32% of employees work remotely. At present, in Russia there are about 123 thousand remote jobs for the total number of 4.5 million vacancies in Russia, that makes up 2.7%. The study shows the remote employment trends and considers opportunities provided by flexible working arrangements and home-based work for employees and employers. The article presents a list of typically "female" occupations and positions in the remote employment segment based on the content analysis of vacancies and CVs placed on job search websites during 2019.
