Renewable Energy Resources for Romania

Abstract:

Electricity demand in Romania declined during the 1990s, and several older thermal units were decommissioned. However, demand has recently increased and is expected to continue as the economy expands. The paper aims to analyze the availability of renewable energy resources in Romania and to reveal their potential in dealing with major public policy issues like energy security and climate change mitigation. Thus, many new electricity generation projects are underway. Privatization has proceeded slowly with many of the large industries still owned by the government. Plans have been made to privatize the electric sector; however, actual progress has been slow. The Romanian Agency has proposed Directive No. 77, which would provide significant incentives for renewable energy development.
