Abstract:
This study aims to analyse and compare the perception of seafarers on risk factors affecting the shipping safety considering the work environment. A survey was conducted among Polish seafarers carrying out selected functions related to management, operation, and support on container and bulk sea vessels. Based on collected data it was possible to identify and rank risk factor groups. According to the respondents, human and systemic factors are of crucial importance and have the greatest impact on shipping safety. The research also revealed possible solutions that may be implemented to increase the safety for ships’ crews, considering the opinion of seafarers. Research results may be used by shipowners involved in maritime fleet management to improve shipping safety and sustainability.
