Abstract:
The study focused on ascertaining the roles of trade unions in the attainment of the educational goals in Nigeria. Survey research design formed the design of the study. The population of the study comprised of 380 respondents which were drawn from the teaching and non-teaching staff of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Otto/Ijanikin, Lagos State, Nigeria. Data for the study was collected through the use of a structured questionnaire, which was distributed to the 380 sampled population of the study. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics. Based on the result obtained from the data analysed, the study found out among others that trade unions play a significant role in ensuring that educational goals are accomplished. The study also revealed that issues relating to the conditions of service, depleted states of infrastructure, underfunding of the tertiary institution, and non-payment of arrears and entitlement are the major factors promoting disagreement between the Management of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Otto/Ijanikin, Lagos State, Nigeria and the Unions. Thus, the study recommended, among others, that labour dispute management committees in the College of Education should be set up to deal internally with all union issues in order to further increase productivity. A tripartite committee of the Government, the National Industrial Court and the Trade Union should be set up to recommend the review regularly.
