Romanian Certified Seed Production. Evolution and Characteristics in the International Context

Abstract:

Advanced agricultural production currently depends on factors such as soil quality, agricultural works, the quantity of water available to plants during cultivation (either from natural rainfall or irrigation), farming treatments applied, yearly temperature regime and others. A particularly important element is the seed material used by farmers, which may be responsible for the quantity and quality of the agricultural production, for the food security of the region and, in some cases, for the safety and health of the population. The article carried out an assessment of the national production of certified seeds, analysing and interpreting the areas assigned for this activity and the production obtained at the county level during the period 2014-2017. The assessment of the concentration of the seed market in Romania, by calculating the GS Index, revealed high values of the indicator and a high degree of concentration of the market. The research has led to interesting results on the development of this segment of the agricultural product market, which can be useful to farmers and the national business environment.
