Abstract:
The aim of this article is to identify the main determinants of the decision to emigrate among Romanian medical doctors. We investigate whether the financial or the professional factors are the most important in the decision making process and whether the attraction (pull) effect of the destination country is stronger than the pressure (push) effect in the origin country. We found that the financial factors have a stronger influence in the decision to emigrate. The pull effect of the level of payment in the health sector is greater than the push effect, concluding that a policy measure proposing the increase of the physicians’ salaries would not solve the emigration issue, as the medical doctors will continue to be attracted by the higher salaries from the destination countries.
