Salary as a motivational tool for reducing turnover among academics of selected schools in Nigeria

Abstract:

The study investigated the role of salary as a tool for reducing turnover among academics of selected schools in Nigerian. The sample consist of two secondary schools, Iganmode Grammar school in Ota, Ogun state with 152 teachers and ikotun high school in Lagos state with 136 teachers. 100 copies of questionnaire were administered randomly to academics in both schools and 156 copies were adjudged usable for this study. 80 copies of questionnaire were retrieved from Iganmode Grammar school and 76 copies were retrieved from ikotun high school. The data obtained were analysed through the use of statistical package for social sciences. The findings showed that majority of the academics in both Iganmode grammar school (51.3%) and Ikotun high school (42.1%) disagreed to be satisfied with the salary they receive. The study also revealed that a high percentage of teachers in both schools will opt for another job if any. Based on these findings, it is recommended that prompt payment and increase in salary of the academics will increase will motivate the teachers and reduce turnover intentions.
