Scholarship as a CSR Initiative: The Exploratory Study of the Company’s Motives in Indonesia

Abstract:

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has drawn increasing attention for both academicians and business practitioners. It has been widely known that companies put some efforts into doing their CSR activities due to several motives. This paper focuses on a specific CSR initiative (i.e. scholarship program) provided by two companies in Indonesia. We conducted semi-structured interviews with the representatives of the companies to explore the company’s motives and conducted a cross-case analysis. The findings revealed that both firm-serving and public-serving motives existed as the motives for doing CSR activities. The interviews also suggested that belief, value and religious thought would also be salient factors for an organization to initiate its CSR activity.
