Abstract:

The research was carried out with the financial support of the RFFR and the Government of the Republic of Mari El within the framework of the scientific project No. 16-11-12002 "The Mari School in the Second Half of the 19th –early 20th  Centuries: Historical Experience". The article deals with the history of primary school education in the Mari region in the XIX - early XX centuries. The specifics of the state educational policy, the educational system of N.I. Ilminskyi and specific issues of building schools are described, the main stages in the development of secular and spiritual schools are traced, and the teaching staff as well as the population of students is identified.
