Abstract:
The current paper looks at threats, risks and vulnerabilities from outer space and aims at establishing the interdependencies of space critical infrastructures to other critical systems, technologies and services. It first defines what security from and of space means, and it continues by bringing into discussion the threats associated to the concept of ‘space situational awareness’, i.e. solar weather, near-Earth objects and space debris. The paper continues with presenting the risks and vulnerabilities, as well as interdependencies by other sectors of critical infrastructure. Finally, the paper draws conclusions highlighting the areas that need to be addressed differently, highlighting the importance of approaching critical infrastructure protection from the above.
