Simulation Environment of Energy-Aware Switching Fabrics

Abstract:

The article addresses the issue of reducing electricity consumption in switching fields. The electricity consumption by the IT (Information Technology) industry has been a subject of research by many scientific centers, network equipment manufacturers, and operators for years. This is an extremely important topic as it affects all of us. Increasing electricity consumption has a significant impact on humanity. On one hand, it raises OPEX (OPerating EXpenditures) costs; on the other, it affects the natural environment by exacerbating the greenhouse effect. The paper presents a simulation environment that allows for the assessment of electricity consumption by the switching field. The prepared application enables the study of various traffic distributions (such as Erlang or Pascal) at different intensities of generated events and the study of various connection path selection algorithms. In addition to research on reducing electricity consumption, the environment can be used in the educational process, as it allows tracking the data routing process in switching fields.
