Abstract:
This paper considers the role of social enterprise in rural service provision. Using a qualitative approach, the paper draws on data from interviews with stakeholders in the Highlands of Scotland to assess the impact of rural social enterprise. Our findings suggest that social enterprises play a role in improving the quality of life in rural areas by creating local services that help to support local communities. Collaborations between the public sector and social enterprises might represent a feasible solution to addressing gaps in service provision in rural areas. However, to fully benefit from social enterprises, strong policy leadership and a supportive local environment are required.
