Social Entrepreneurship as a Global Factor for Economic Development in the Western Balkan Region: Case Study on “Food for Everyone” Start Up, as a Successful Story for Implementing Social Entrepreneurship in Macedonia

Abstract:

The development of social entrepreneurship in the Western Balkan region resembled an "impossible mission" until just a few years ago. After discovering and understanding the potential of social entrepreneurship to create positive societal changes in a financially sustainable manner, an increased importance of this alternative model of entrepreneurship in our society had to be given. However, despite the raise in importance and popularity within the public and government and non-government institutions in these countries, this concept is still at the very beginning of its development in becoming an essential part for a sustainable economic development in our modern societies. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the different driving factors and stakeholders that support social entrepreneurship in the Western Balkan region as well as the needs in various areas for its development. The goal is to analyze the current situation, as well as the needs, challenges and opportunities for development of social entrepreneurship in the region, through a special case study analysis of the social enterprise “Food for Everyone” as a successful story for implementing social entrepreneurship in Macedonia. Finally, we summarize the conclusions and recommendations for future actions and activities. We sincerely hope that the conclusions will be an impetus for the next steps in the development of social entrepreneurship, implemented through strategic partnerships within the Western Balkan Region and Republic of Macedonia.
