Strategic Management in Polish Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises and ERP Class Information Systems

Abstract:

Strategic management is not commonly applied by Polish entrepreneurs. Interestingly, such situation concerns mostly the SME sector (small- and medium-sized enterprises). In that case one must indicate the tools to support the process of implementation of strategic management solutions, especially ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) class systems supporting both operational and strategic planning. The employers’ requirements and study results point to a need of considering the ERP class systems in education programmes at higher education courses of economics. The aim of this article is to determine the needs of building the SME entrepreneurs’ awareness of strategic management supported by the available ERP class systems. To execute the objective, an own research results analysis was made for small- and medium-sized enterprises of the transport services sector. Besides a reference was made to the study performed in a group of students of the Faculty of Management of the Higher Education Provider. The missing awareness and missing flow of information on the operation of the vision, mission and the objectiveness between the managers and the personnel result in missing grounds for the implementation of strategic management philosophy. For that reason, the process should be supported with ERP class information systems.
