Students’ Well-Being and Learning Readiness during Coronavirus Outbreak in Malaysian Higher Learning Institutions

Abstract:

The main objectives of this paper is to identify the perceived severity of COVID-19 on students’ well-being and learning readiness, to better understand how students are coping with the present crisis, both in general and in regard to their daily learning activities. Despite the difficulties experienced, the students were optimistic about their future and the university leaders’ ability to manage the crisis and provide adequate support to students. Challenges faced by students include difficulty undertaking online learning due to internet connectivity and available means to communicate. A critical success factor for students to engage in online learning during a crisis is their technological capacity to use online tools. The findings indicate that students reported an average data capacity to carry out online learning but a bit higher level of accessibility to learn via popular social media apps. Despite the challenges of internet connectivity, the students took the effort to use their data capacity to access the learning resources provided by lecturers.
