Study on the Areas and Varieties of Wheat for Seed Cultivated in Romania

Abstract:

The paper proposes an analysis of the cultivated surfaces and the wheat seed production in Braila County. Using the data of the Territorial Inspectorate for the Quality of Seeds, the main wheat seeds used by the Braila farmers were presented and described. The results of the study showed that the most common varieties of wheat seeds in the agriculture of Braila County are indigenous, better suited to the local conditions of cultivation, to high temperatures and to a lower level of rainfall, which are in fact cultivated on the widest agricultural areas. Glosa and Miranda are the most common varieties used to obtain seed material. With the exception of the year 2016, the average yield of indigenous varieties grown in Braila County was higher than the imported ones. The results of the research may be useful to Braila farmers specializing in seed wheat, and can direct their efforts to optimize production by choosing the most competitive wheat varieties.
