Study on the Implementation of Sustainable Education in European Union

Abstract:

This paper aims to explore the situation of implementation of a sustainable education in European Union (EU27) in accordance with the sustainable development goal 4 of the Agenda 30. The paper introduces a conceptual framework based on three axes which contain relevant key performance indicators to be employed with the aim to track the performance and identify the essential challenges for the implementation of a sustainable education within the EU27 member states. The results of this paper show that there are many underachievers in sustainable education and most EU27 member states have still to unlock the real potential in the education field and must accelerate progress on the formal, non- formal education and basic knowledge of pupils. The findings of this paper may be used by policymakers and national authorities to speed up the progress towards a sustainable education, especially in the case of the worst performers.
