Study on the self-sufficiency ratio for the main cereals cultivated in Romania – index of the food security insurance capacity

Abstract:

Cereals are the most important group of products sold worldwide, the evolution of production and trade with this type of crop having a great significance both in the economy but also in the tradition of every country. Romania isn’t an exception, the predominance of the rural areas and the geographical positioning favoring the cereal cultivation in the plain aria. Through this paper we proposed to study the manner in which Romania manages to cover its own consumption need, using an indicator mainly used by FAO, the self-sufficiency ratio, that shows how a country is able to cover the consumption of a particular product from its own production, taking into account the fluctuations generated by the trade of the product. Following the calculation and analysis, we found an increased capacity for Romania in self-sufficiency in terms of cereal production and consumption from its own production. The group with the highest level of self-sufficiency is the group of wheat crops, where Romania has experienced significant increases in production and exports.
