Sustainable Development of Romanian Extractive Industry

Abstract:

As announced in our previous works, this paper is part of a larger research that deals with sustainable development and environmental protection in extractive industry. In this respect, in this paper we demonstrate that risks and threats to accessing energy and non-energy strategic resources is increasingly diversified. Therefore, some strategic options were designed starting from the strengths and opportunities identified in the SWOT analysis (presented in our previous works), but intended to offset weaknesses and avoid threats, according to prioritization, of the efficient use of mineral and energy resources (natural gas, coal, and non-ferrous ores), and perpetuating the previously positive experiences. These outcomes will allow to analyze the extractive industry outlook in the economic context in general, and the energy sector in particular, to identify re-industrialization requirements for this industry, and to shape up the industrial policy elements that support and boost the re-industrialization process. Therefore, based on these assumptions, in this article we have identified several possible strategic options for achieving sustainable development in the exploitation of mineral and energy resources in Romania in view of time horizon 2035.
