Technology in business: a preliminary study of new concept on technopreneurship in Malaysia

Abstract:

Government of Malaysia has come up with a new policy under the Ministry of Entrepreneurship Development and Cooperation (MEDC) which urges and encourages people especially students on the need to create jobs and  not to expect secure employment with government or private companies. This is due to increases in the number of unemployed people which is becoming more serious among graduates. Most of them are educated people with exposure to ICT skills. Thus, government had provided many short courses to explore the use of ICT skills involvement in entrepreneurship. Hence, a concept of technopreneurship was introduced to encourage those unemployed to involve in this business which can generate incomes. A new economy has emerged, in which knowledge is the most important element, forcing players in business to change into new paradigms and to take advantage of powerful information tools. The introduction of ICT subject in schools and implementation of ICT in university subjects had enabled graduates to acquire more added values to their knowledge. They can exploit networks using Internet technologies, intranets and extranets. This paper attempts to explore a new concept of technopreneurship in business which is combination of current technology and entrepreneurship. This paper will also discuss the specific context and try to propose a conceptual idea which can be implemented in Malaysia.
