The Application of the Gravity Model for the Romanian Erasmus Students’ Flows

Abstract:

Purpose-to analyze the Erasmus students’ flows design between Romania and the partner countries between 2004 and 2012 using the gravity model.
Design/Methodology/Approach- for the determination of the coefficients, EViews and panel data were used, with 8 cross-sections and 9 periods, respectively the period between 2004 and 2012.
Findings- the GDP and the population have a positive effect on the Erasmus students’ flows, the geographical distance and the cultural distance between two partner countries have not a significant influence on the Erasmus students’ flows and the linguistic similarity between the country of origin and the host country has a positive effect on the Erasmus students’ flows.
Practical implications-this paper is useful for the Romanian students, who, usually, want to study in countries with other Romanian students and, also, for the international universities, to find out which qualities they need to develop in order to send and receive international students.
Originality/Value-the application of the gravity model on the Romanian Erasmus students’ flows.
