The Comparison of Managers’ Decision-Making Processes in IT and Industrial Enterprises

Abstract:

Decision making is an integral part of all managerial activities. Particularly important role for the future success and competitiveness of enterprises is played by the decision making on investment. This article aims to compare the methods used for investment appraisal and other aspects and elements of the managerial decision making on investment and risk evaluation being performed by the IT and the industrial middle-sized enterprises in the Slovak Republic. The research worked with the sample of 147 enterprises (99 of which were from the field of industry and 48 from information technology). Some of the main findings include the fact that the Net Present Value method is the most-frequently used dynamic method for the investment appraisal (used by 72% of industrial and 65% of IT enterprises). Further, numeral characteristics for the risk evaluation are used in 80% of the addressed IT enterprises but only in 30% of those from industry. The strongest factor influencing the investment decision making for IT enterprises is represented by their customers. It was also revealed that intuitive ideas gained via brainstorming are used to generate investment projects in 75% of the IT enterprises but only in 37% of the industrial ones.
