The Concept of Online Sociability: A View from Different Disciplines

Abstract:

Sociability indicates internal tendency for human beings to seek for social interaction. During the last decade, within the emerging use and adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs), especially, social technologies, among different disciplines, there has been deep interest in studying sociability. A growing number of recent studies from various disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, psychology, neurobiology, marketing, computer-supported collaborative learning environment (CSCL) etc. have analysed the phenomenon of sociability. Different disciplines highlight diverse aspects of sociability such as trait, the state of being social, “the third place”, the result of sociability (social capital) and others. Consequently, there are various definitions of sociability in scientific literature. Thus, the terms ‘sociality’ and ‘sociability’ are used as synonymous showing differences of opinion in the use of these words. This study aims to review various disciplines and propose a comprehensive concept and definition of sociability in the online context. The findings shall demonstrate the concept of sociability from the holistic perspective. This study will enrich theoretical understanding of the concept of sociability in the online context. Finally, further research directions will also be brought forward for further research and study.
