The Digital Literacy Portrait of an Education Community

Abstract:

Digital literacy is defined as the ability to understand and use information in a variety of formats coming from various resources presented through computers and the internet. Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest number of internet users in the world. In 2019, out of 268.2 million people, 150 million are connected to the internet (a 13% increase or goes up for around 17% from the previous year) and school children (aged 13-17 years) account for 15% of the total users or about 2.25 million people. The large number of school-aged internet users leads to a study on the description of the users’ ability to understand and use information in accessing information through digital media. A survey of digital literacy was conducted to 140 members of an education community consisting of 48 teachers and 92 students from 9 provinces and 9 regencies/cities in Indonesia. The study found that first, the school community already has a good understanding of the conception of digital literacy. Second, there was a good portrait and intense use of the detection of digital literacy capabilities, the understanding of the use of search engines, explorer applications, active participation in social media, online learning, and digital communities with various capabilities. Third, the ability to read and write online has become a common activity carried primarily through the web like wattpad, rumah belajar, and media guru. The attention given to the three dimensions for detecting digital literacy competencies produces a good portrait that becomes the basis for building the digitally literate education community.
