The Effect of Personality Traits and Career Success among the Hotel Managers in the Northern States of Malaysia

Abstract:

There is a growing body of literature on managers and their career satisfaction. Unfortunately, this growing literature is rather prescriptive and logic-deductive in career satisfaction. Literatures are more skewed towards work outcomes. Consequently, the basic element such as personality is rather viewed lightly. Looking to the growth and performances of the Malaysia hotel industry and according to the Malaysia’s aim to upscale the hotel industry of the economy towards higher value-added activities, managers in this sector are expected to be under considerable pressure to perform well and succeed in their careers. Similarly, the importance of the services sector in boosting the economic development of Malaysia necessitates the need for managers within this sector to enhance their performance and succeed in their careers. This study examines the effect of personality towards managers’ career satisfaction in the hotel industry which mainly focused on the Northern State of Malaysia. By using purposive sampling, there were about 83 managers in hotel industry participated in this research. The questionnaires were designed by using various sources of reputable literatures. After the data were analyze, finding shows some both expected and unexpected findings which are discussed in detail in findings section. In conclusion, although the relationship of personality towards career satisfaction might be seen as marginal, the effects are still worth to be taken into consideration.
