The Effectiveness of Tax Amnesty in the Long Run, Study Case: Indonesia

Abstract:

Tax amnesty often used by the government from various countries to boost their tax collections in the short run. However, the effectiveness of this amnesty is still being debatable, particularly in the long term. This study aimed to measure the effectiveness, of a tax amnesty named Sunset Policy in Indonesia, as a sample case in developing country. At macro-level, this study shows that the Sunset Policy is effective in improving compliance of individual taxpayers in the long run. Nonetheless, it has no effect on compliance of corporate taxpayers on macro-level and even tends to increase the aggressiveness of corporate taxpayers, especially those owned by foreign investors.
