The Growth Path towards the Process-Oriented Organisation

Abstract:

A substantial lack of knowledge on the growth path to become a process-oriented organisation still exists in BPM literature, which so far mainly focused on single best practice cases or theoretical maturity models. This paper describes the results of a series of semi-structured interviews to explore real-life cases of growth paths towards a process-oriented organisation. 10 organisations gave insight in their respective historical growth paths and future implementation plans. We analysed whether their growth paths altered and how exactly they came to their current maturity level. Our cases were compared on structure, strategy, timing, sponsorship, etc. to discover how these would influence the growth path and the degree of BPM maturity. This research contributes to the understanding of the trail that organisations take towards high BPM maturity, will help readers to benchmark their efforts and eventually aid them in developing a roadmap to become process-oriented.
