The Impact of Information Infrastructure Capabilities on Knowledge Manipulation Skills: A Conceptual Framework

Abstract:

The globalisation of business, shift from production-based to knowledge-based economy, government encouragements, implementation and rapid growth of ICT and achieving business targets have made understanding of knowledge management (KM) implementation and Information Technology (IT) infrastructure capabilities a must today across organizations. However, there is limited empirical link between KM and ICT infrastructure capabilities, (Bawany, 2004; Chong, 2005; Kim, 2001). A key objective of this paper, therefore, is to determine the impact of IT infrastructure capabilities on knowledge manipulation skills. A set of survey questionnaire will be developed based on an extensive review of literature and will be distributed to about 600 middle managers working in the MSC Malaysia companies. Multiple analytical tools which include factor analysis, multiple linear regression, t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Bonferoni post hoc test and structural equation modelling (SEM) will be used in this study to determine the significant levels of associations and interactions between the variables tested. The findings of this research would offer useful information to the MSC-status companies on types of IT infrastructures that are required to effectively implement KM initiatives and eventually lead them to future business success. To academics, the empirical insights from this study would be useful for theory building in the subject area.
