The Impact of the Online Teaching & Learning on Engineering Students’ Competencies

Abstract:

The current research aims to reveal how this period of online classes has affected students' lives professionally and socially and what learning methods they have approached during the pandemic to cope with the information received in various ways.

Due to the pandemic, teachers had to develop new methods and tools to approach laboratory work and courses taking into account the particular characteristics of student classes, level of learning, methods of information delivery and even available technology. Thus, the content of the teaching materials was delivered through a variety of online learning tools, in correspondence with the format of the materials developed, as follows: the Google Drive account of the department to monitor the entire teaching activity; Google feedback forms; Faculty website; PDF Guides for applications, the Moodle educational platform of the faculty; product design software, Microsoft Teams.

To highlight this online impact on students’ competencies and lives, a questionnaire with explicit questions about the learning methods approached by the students and the strategies of teachers to support the courses and laboratories was used. The questionnaire contains four different sections as follows: identification of student participants, organizing online teaching activities, home themes/ projects/ applications and the impact of online learning on professional skills and social relationships.

The online classes were analysed with the help of this feedback in order to improve teaching and learning methods and the teaching materials also.
