The Influence of Work Motivation on Job Satisfaction among Employees of the Banking Sector in Nigeria

Abstract:

Motivation of employees is commonly acknowledged to be a critical issue for managers to achieve organizational goals and objectives. This study attempts to examine the relationship between motivation and satisfaction and performance among 200 employees of the Banking sector in Nigeria. The rationale for the study was simply an observation that some employees seem better adjusted and happy at work and are able to cope well with demands of the working environment while others are not.

The data collected from the investigation revealed that three motivational factors, namely achievement, recognition and work itself caused higher job satisfaction and related to higher performance. Also, hygiene factors namely supervision, company policy and administration and interpersonal relations with supervisors cause higher dissatisfaction among employees. Thus, motivational factors must be viewed in a broad context in order to understand constraints and success factors that affect the prospects of employees.
