The Involvement of Public University Students in Social Entrepreneurship Activity: Empirical Study in Malaysia

Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to identify individual factors that influence students to participate in social entrepreneurship activity and the outcome of social entrepreneurship activity to human capital and social capital.

This quantitative research has been conducted on 797 Enactus students using stratified sampling at three categories of public university in Malaysia. For this purpose, statistical analysis was done on the data obtained from 797 Enactus students using stratified sampling at 20 public university in Malaysia.

Based on Partial Least Squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) method, our empirical study showed that involvement in social entrepreneurship activity is influenced positively by four key factors: empathy, moral obligation, self-efficacy and social support. Data analysis also revealed that there is a significant relationship between these individual factors with their human capital and social capital.

The study that highlighted the influence of individual factor on student’s involvement in social entrepreneurship activity and its relationship with human capital and social capital is not well validated empirically in Malaysia. Thus, this study was contributing the new body of knowledge in social entrepreneurship development in Malaysia.
