The Level of Sustainability of Enterprise’s Activity as Assessed by Employees – Comparative Analysis in Poland and India

Abstract:

The article aims to diagnose the sustainability of enterprises' activities in the assessment of employees, and its relations with practices used in the enterprise for sustainable development. It was also decided to establish whether employees would like their companies to operate sustainably. Quantitative and qualitative research was carried out based on a questionnaire survey among 449 employees of enterprises in Poland and India. According to 18%, their enterprises operate sustainably, i.e., reduce the harmfulness of their activities to the natural environment and act for the benefit of employees and other social initiatives. In the opinion of 29% of the respondents, their companies' activity is only sustainable to some extent, and 8% believe that it is not sustainable. The respondents from India assess the sustainability of their enterprises to a much higher degree than those from Poland. It was found using the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient that the higher the employees rate the level of sustainability of their enterprise the more often environmental and social issues are taken into account in the enterprise when making critical decisions, employee volunteering is conducted, thus enabling employees to implement charity projects during work, the enterprise communicates and promotes its dedication to sustainable development, supports employees in striving for a balance between work and personal life, and improves their working conditions. The results of these studies may support the managerial staff responsible for implementing corporate strategic plans related to sustainable development. They will allow for a better understanding of how employees assess the level of sustainability of the company's operations and what activities allow them to increase this assessment.
