Abstract:
Since the late 17th Century, classical liberal theorists had argued that publicity and openness provide the best protection from the excesses of power. The notion of the press as watchdog is more than 200 years old. Yet the idea of vigilante media monitoring government and exposing its excesses has gained new traction in many parts ofthe world.seeks to identify practical steps being taken by the Nigerian media to improve and ensure accountable governance in Nigeria’s democracy. This research made use of both quantitative and qualitative approaches of survey and in-depth interview, with 120 respondents and eight key interviewees. The findings of this research revealed that the Nigerian media does take practical steps to improve and ensure accountable governance in Nigeria’s democracy. Subsequently, the Nigeria constitution must expressly define the powers of the press and of course, the media must realize where their loyalty lies.
