The Moderating Role of ICT and Financial Development on Carbon Emissions in Sub-Saharan African Countries

Abstract:

This study examines the moderating role of information and communication technology (ICT) and financial development on carbon emissions intensity for sub-Saharan African countries for the period 1996-2019. The econometric technique used is the generalized method of moments (GMM). The empirical findings revealed ICT and financial development have a positive significant role in carbon emissions intensity. This implies that a percentage increase in ICT and financial development will increase carbon emissions by 0.013% and 0.002% for internet access and mobile phone subscription respectively. The study recommends that the government and financial service providers in the SSA region should promote financial incentives for green technology adoption which will reduce carbon emissions intensity.
