The Organic Food Standards: Evidence from the EU and the USA

Abstract:

The organic food standards are increasingly being adopted and improving worldwide as the health and environmental requirements are becoming more emphasized in the food industry. This paper aims to investigate the organic food standards of the European Union and the United States by analyzing the contents of the current legislation. The methodology is based on using the content analysis and the illustration of its main themes in both countries. The results indicate more legislative history for the organic food in the case of the USA, but a higher share of the organic crop area in total agricultural land in the case of the EU.
