The Role of Implementing Projects in the Transformation of a Service Enterprise in terms of Industry 4.0. Case Study of a Company from the Service Sector in Poland

Abstract:

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has created new opportunities for every kind of enterprise. The main benefits come from the creation of technological fully integrated company organization made possible by the realization of this project. Therefore, the role of project m anagement in Industry 4.0 conditions increases significantly, which is emphasized in many literature sources. There are challenges facing the implementation of projects - the first being the implementation of new advanced Industry 4.0 technologies, the second being to bring them to use in operational processes within companies. Instead of manufacturing companies, Industry 4.0 exerts influence on service companies, that provides services dedicated to changing Industry. It also requires deep transformation, which is realized by the generation of new projects. The literature on Industry 4.0 concerns a significant proportion of manufacturing enterprises, which creates a gap in relation to service enterprises. The purpose of this article is to characterize the role of project implementation in the transformation of a service enterprise in the terms of Industry 4.0. The first part of the article characterizes the concept of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which forms the basis for further considerations on the characteristics of projects in Industry 4.0. Next, the evolution of project management methodologies over the years and approximate implementation approaches used in Industry 4.0 are discussed. The article also describes the challenges posed to enterprises in connection with the transformation of service companies and the resulting project goals. The last part presents a case study of a Polish service company, within which projects from Industry 4.0 are carried out, related to the organizational transformation taking place.
