The Wheat Market in Romania

Abstract:

Wheat crops represent an important strategic element in ensuring national food security. The paper proposes an overview of the trends present on the domestic wheat market and its place in the European and global context. The conducted research showed that Romania has made important progress regarding wheat production, managing, after 2007, to have a surplus trade balance in the foreign trade with wheat. Although the production trends are promising on a short-term basis, the low productivity level per hectare, which is far below the European average, indicates an agricultural potential, which is insufficiently exploited and a high dependence level of crops on weather conditions. The lack of or insufficient rainfall leads to crop fluctuation in Romanian agriculture, which does not have a nationally developed irrigation system.
