Towards Digitalization: A Contrastive Culture Analysis of Digital Literacy in Europe

Abstract:

The impact of digitalization on cultural processes and disclosure of possible developments in the future is the main goal of the research. The theoretical framework comprises explanation of the main concepts of European culture and digital literacy and provides an overview of previous researches on digital literacy and culture. The paper also covers the importance of the digital literacy issue in the European context. The existence of digital equivalents in traditional cultural forms and the role of digital identity in the development of culture, which could progress in parallel with technological development, is analysed as well. Comparative analysis of the two extremes concerning internet users forms the basis of the main part of the research in order to reveal conditions and factors, which promote or hinder digitalization and the acquisition of digital literacy.
