Abstract:
Compared with the EU Regions of Development, the Romanian’s Regions of Development don’t differ too much in structure: they are characterized by significant social, economic, and territorial disparities. The large economic disparities between rural and urban areas are a key issue, the risk of youth migration to the city being major in achieving sustainable development targets. What can be seen as a particularity of these regions is the high level of population established in the rural areas, which include 90 % of the Romanian territory and 34 % of its population. For this paper we selected The North East Region of Development which is situated at the bottom of EU Regions ranking, where the social and economical concerns are beyond environmental, political and scientific dimensions which also should be considered in a sustainable approach. The paper aims to evaluate the resources and alternatives which can be considered and capitalized in this region of development and to indentify solutions to improve the socio- economic aspects, following sustainable development principles.
