Traceability of Wine with Controlled Denomination of Origin

Abstract:

Traceability of wine brings numerous benefits to both producers and consumers and organizations along the wine chain. The objectives of the paper are to identify the benefits that traceability brings to wine chain operators, considering the case of wines with appellations of origin and geographical indications. They are brought into discussion because traceability is easier to be implemented for these wine, for which numerous documents keep evidence of production, sourcing, destinations etc. To achieve this purpose, wine law and the law of trademarks and geographical indications, orders of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and numerous specialized works have been consulted. Results show that traceability brings benefits to all operators of the wine chain, the main advantages that it confers qualitative and regional differentiation of wines, quality assurance, and consumers’ protection.
