Transferable Skills as a Criterion for Recruiting Researchers

Abstract:

Transferable skills are an integral part of the advertised vacancies and, subsequently, a criterion for selecting new employees. Job vacancy advertisements no longer just require education, experience, and expertise, but employers are also recognising the importance of skills that are not dependent on the employee's specialism and are 'transferable' between employers and disciplines. The aim of this paper is to find out which transferable skills appear most frequently in vacancy advertisements for researchers in the Czech Republic and their ranking and to compare this data with the results of a large-scale study carried out in advertisements across the EU. The basic method was to analyse advertisements posted on the Euraxess website by institutions from the Czech Republic during a specified period in 2023. Only the 10 skills that occur the most frequently were subjected to further analysis, and then the frequency and the relative frequency of each requirement were determined. As this was a random selection from all advertised researcher positions in the Czech Republic posted on Euraxess in 2023, the observed relative frequencies can be considered as point estimates of the probabilities of the respective requirements occurring and were therefore subsequently supplemented with interval estimates. It was also examined which proportion of advertised positions contained any of the skills analysed.
