Turkey and Russia in the Global Order. Implications for the Security of Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract:

In the past, Russia and Turkey considered each other as enemies. The breakthrough in Turkish-Russian relations took place after the Islamic Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power in Turkey in 2002. In recent years we have witnessed a rapid revival in Turkish-Russian relations. Both countries are developing their economic and military cooperation and supporting each other internationally. However, this direction of Turkey's foreign policy concerns Western allies. They fear that the country will be completely dependent on Russia and thus become more unpredictable. Therefore, the main aim of this article is to examine the factors that have influenced the rapprochement of economic and military relations between these countries, especially between 2004 and 2019. The article will also debate the outlook for bilateral relations and the consequences of this new alliance for the security in Central and Eastern Europe.
